How to ward off quackery
It is no doubt that the best way to ward off quackery is by remembrance of Allah, particularly by reciting the supplications and remembrances (dhikr) that the Messenger of Allah -peace and prayer of Allah be upon him- has taught us at the morning and evening time. Likewise, the remembrances and supplications that we recite during various of our daily activities. Below are several indications that explained about the excellence of several remembrances that could ward off against the quackery and satan’s disturbance.
– Reciting the ayat Kursy at morning and evening time, after completing the obligatory prayers and before sleeping
The Messenger of Allah -peace and prayer of Allah be upon him- explained about it in several of his sayings, among which is a hadith that was narrated by Imam Bukhari and Muslim, from Abu Huraira -may Allah be pleased with him-, about the story of Abu Huraira -may Allah be pleased with him- when he was tasked by the Messenger of Allah -peace and prayer of Allah be upon him- to guard the zakat fitra. At the end of the story, satan -who came to him- unveiled a secret that could save the muslims from his disturbance, that is by reciting the aayat Kursy before sleeping. Then Abu Huraira -may Allah be pleased with him- told the Messenger of Allah -peace and prayer of Allah be upon him- about it, as mentioned in the text below:
“”Satan said, “When you wish to lie on your bed, then recite the aayat Kursy, thus you’ll always be under Allah’s guard and you’ll not be approached by satan till morning!”. the Messenger of Allah -peace and prayer of Allah be upon him- replied, “He has told you the truth (about that) while he (basically) is an accomplished liar, he is satan.”
– Reciting بسم الله (“in the name of Allah”) before undressing and before entering the toilet
the Messenger of Allah -peace and prayer of Allah be upon him- has taught us to recite بسم الله (“in the name of Allah”) if we wish to undress before having a bath or changing clothes or other purposes.
Whoever recites بسم الله (“in the name of Allah”) when undressing his or her clothes, the satan will not be able to see his or her awrah.
The Messenger of Allah -peace and prayer of Allah be upon him- said:
“”The screen between the view of Jinn and the awrah of Adam’s sons is when one of you wished to enter a toilet, he recited,
– Reciting the supplication before entering the toilet
Anas Ibn Malik -may Allah be pleased with him- said, that every time the Messenger of Allah – peace and prayer of Allah be upon him- wanted to enter the toilet, he would recite:
“O Allah, protect me from the disturbance of the male and female of Jinn.”
Shouldn’t we follow the example of the Messenger of Allah -peace and prayer of Allah be upon him-? Even though he was a slave that has been purified from sins and was protected by Allah, by he still sought for Allah’s protection from the disturbance of satan/jinn.
– Reciting supplication before having sexual intercourse
The perfection of Islam reflected on how complete it is as a teaching, that even the manners of having an intimate relationship between husband and wife is also regulated and guided in it. The Messenger of Allah -peace and prayer of Allah be upon him- taught his followers that when they want to have a sexual intercourse with their wives, they should recite:
“In the name of Allah. O Allah, please distance the satan from us, and from the fortune that You’ll bestow upon us.” And if the pair is bound to be blessed with children at that time, satan will never be able to harm him.” .
– Adoring the house with the recitation of chapter Al Baqara in it
Many houses are built classily, but without the feeling of comfort and homy inside it. Even worse, sometimes eerie things happened inside it. That is because many of those houses are adorned with decorations that provoke the spirits to come to it, such as photographs and statues.
And more fatally, the residents of those houses are rarely performing the voluntary prayers nor reciting the Qur’an inside it.
The Messenger of Allah -peace and prayer of Allah be upon him- said,
From Abu Huraira -may Allah be pleased with him-, that the Messenger of Allah -peace and prayer of Allah be upon him- said, “Don’t make your houses as if it were graveyard. Indeed, satan will run away from house which the chapter Al Baqara is recited in it.”
– Reciting the supplication upon entering the house
It is mentioned in a hadith that the Messenger of Allah -peace and prayer of Allah be upon him- said,
From Jabir Ibn Abdillah, he heard the Messenger of Allah -peace and prayer of Allah be upon him- said, “When someone entered his house and he mentioned Allah’s name while entering it and before enjoying his meal, satan would say, ‘There is no place to stay for you nor food.’ But if he entered his house without mentioning Allah’s name, satan would say, ‘You get a place to stay.’ And if he didn’t mention Allah’s name before enjoying his meal, satan would say, ‘You get a place to stay and food to eat.'”
– Reciting the supplication upon transiting at a place or entering new places
It is narrated from Khaula bint Hakim, she said, I heard the Messenger of Allah -peace and prayer of Allah be upon him- said, “Whoever stops by a place, then recites,
“I seek Allah’s protection from the evil of the creatures that He created,” then nothing will harm him until he left that place.”
And there are still many more supplications and remembrances that could ward us off the harm of satan/jinn. There are already many scholars that have collected those supplications and remembrances in a compilation book of supplication and remembrance, which could be find at the bookstores. But we should be careful in choosing the book of supplication at the market, since some of those books contain weak or even false hadith. Among the simple, systematically written and according to the sunnah, with affordable price, is the book titled “Hisnul Muslim” (Fortress of a muslim) by Sheikh Sa’id bin Ali Al Qohthiny. This book has been translated into Indonesian language and published by many publishers. I, as the writer of this article, highly recommend my readers to own and memorize it.
And all praises be to Allah alone.
