Umar wont know, but his Lord will
This is a story that was mentioned in the life story of ‘Umar Ibn ‘Abdil ‘Aziz (book 1, page 23). It is the story about the leader of the believers, ‘Umar bin Khaththab -may Allah be pleased with him- and a maiden. When ‘Umar bin Khaththab -may Allah be pleased with him- ruled, he prohibited people to mix the milk with water.
The story began when in one night, ‘Umar bin Khaththab -may Allah be pleased with him- went to the suburb area of Medina. To take a rest, he leaned on a wall of a certain house. Then he heard a voice of a woman who ordered her daughter to mix the milk with water. But the daughter refused to obey her, saying, “How could I mix it, while our caliph ‘Umar prohibits it?
Hearing her daughter’s answer, the mother replied, “‘Umar wont know about it.”
Her daughter replied, “Although ‘Umar wont know, but his Lord will. I will never do it. He has prohibited it.”
The words of that maid went deep to ‘Umar’s heart. Thus in the following morning, he called his son, ‘Ashim, to go to the maiden’s house. He told him the character of the maiden and where she lived, and he said, “Go, O son of mine, and marry her.” Then ‘Ashim married the maid, and they had a daughter, which later became the mother of caliph ‘Umar Ibn ‘Abdil ‘Aziz.
The morals of the story are:
– The earnestness of the predecessor in educating their children.
– It is important to always educate our children with the attitude of muraqaba, the feeling of continuously being watched by Allah the Almighty, whether they were alone or not.
– Not being hesitate in giving advice to parent.
– Choosing the righteous husband or wife for our children.
This story fragment is just an example of how we should take morals from a story to be applied to our children. And there are still many examples in the Qur’an and hadith that could be taken as the stories to tell to our children.
