The Sin of Killing

Killing or Murdering People is A Major Sin

Allah the Holy and Exalted decreed, which can be translated as,

“And he who willfully slays a believer his reward is Hell, where he will abide. Allah’s wrath is against him and He has cast His curse upon him, and has prepared for him a great chastisement.” (QS. An-Nisa/The Women: 93)

And Allah the Holy and Exalted also decreed, which can be translated as,

“Who invoke no other deity along with Allah, nor take any life – which Allah has forbidden – save justly; who do not commit unlawful sexual intercourse – and whoso does that shall meet its penalty; his torment shall be doubled for him on the Day of Resurrection, and he will abide in it in ignominy – unless he repents and believes and does righteous works. For such, Allah will change their evil deeds into good deeds. Allah is Ever Forgiving, Most Compassionate.” (QS. Al-Furqan/The Criterion: 68-70)

And Allah’s decree,

“Therefore We ordained for the Children of Israel that he who slays a soul unless it be (in punishment) for murder or for spreading mischief on earth shall be as if he had slain all mankind; and he who saves a life shall be as if he had given life to all mankind. And indeed again and again did Our Messengers come to them with clear directives, yet many of them continued to commit excesses on earth.” (QS. Al-Maidah/The Table Spread: 32)

And His decree,

“And when the girl-child buried alive shall be asked: for what offence was she killed?” (QS. At-Takwir: 8-9)

The Prophet -peace and prayer of Allah be upon him- also said,

“Stay away from the seven sins that destroying….” and he mentioned (among them),: “…killing a soul that Allah has forbidden (to be killed)”.

In another saying, the Prophet -peace and prayer of Allah be upon him- stated, in response to a question addressed to him,

“What is the greatest sin in consideration with Allah?” He said, “That you set up a rival unto Allah though He Alone created you.” I said, “That is indeed a great sin.” Then I asked, “What is next?” He said, “To kill your son lest he should share your food with you.” I asked, “What is next?” He said, “To commit illegal sexual intercourse with the wife of your neighbor.”

The Prophet -peace and prayer of Allah be upon him- also said,

When two muslims fought against each other bringing their swords (and killing each other), the killer and the killed one will be in Hell (together). He was asked, “It makes sense if the killer (to be in Hell) but what about the killed one?” He answered, “Because (indeed) he also eager in killing his rival.”

The Prophet -peace and prayer of Allah be upon him- also said,

“A believer always be at the spaciousness of his religion, as long as no blood shed unlawful. “

And from Humaid Ibn Hilal, he said that ‘We are told by Bishr Ibn Ashim, he said that, ‘We are told by Uqbah Ibn Malik, from the Prophet -peace and prayer of Allah be upon him- , he said,

The Prophet peace and prayer of Allah be upon him- said,

“A man would not be killed in oppression, but the first son of Adam (the killer) will join the killer in carrying the burden (the sin) of that killing, for he was the first man to set an example of killing.” (Muttafaq alaih).

From Ibn Umar, from the Prophet-peace and prayer of Allah be upon him, he said,

“Whoever kills a disbeliever who had a peace treaty with muslims (Mu`âhad) with no justification, he will not smell the fragrance of Paradise, and its fragrance may be detected from a distance of forty years.”

From Abu Huraira- may Allah be pleased with him-, from the Prophet-peace and prayer of Allah be upon him-, he said,

“Indeed, whoever kills a Mu`âhid that has a covenant from Allah and a covenant from His Messenger -peace and prayer of Allah be upon him-, then he has violated the covenant with Allah and the covenant of His Messenger, so he shall not smell the fragrance of Paradise; even though its fragrance can be sensed from the distance of forty years.”

From Abu Huraira -may Allah be pleased with him-, from the Prophet-peace and prayer of Allah be upon him-, he said,

“Whoever helps to kill a believer, even with half a word, he will meet Allah with (the words) written between his eyes, ‘He has no hope of the mercy of Allah.'” (Narrated by Ahmad and Ibn Maja, but there is a problem in the validity of it’s chain).

From Muawiya, (he said), “I’ve ever heard the Messenger of Allah-peace and prayer of Allah be upon him- said,

“May Allah forgive every sin, except a person who died in an infidelity, or someone who kills a believer intentionally.” (Narrated by An Nasai)
