Biography Imam Sufyan Ibn Uyaina

He is Sufyan Ibn Uyaina Ibn Maimin, his nickname was “Abu Muhammad Al Hilali Al Makki”, an expert in hadith from the holy land. He was born in 107 of Hijra. He was very studious ever since he was a small kid.

Teachers and Students of Sufyan Ibn Uyaina

Among his teachers was Amr Ibn Dinar, Sihabuddin Az Zuhri, Ziyad Ibn Ilaqa, Al Aswad Ibn Qais, Zaid Ibn Aslam, Abdullah Ibn Dinar, Abdurrahman Ibn Al Qasim, and some others scholars. Whereas his senior students, among them were Al A’masy, Ibn Juraij, Shu’ba, Abdullah Ibn Al-Mubarak, Abdurrahman Ibn Mahdi, Ash Shafi’i, Ahmad Ibn Hanbal, Yahya Ibn Ma’in, Ishaq Ibn Rahawaih, Abu Khaitsmah, Al-Fallas, and many other scholars, because almost every knowledge seeker who performed pilgrimage would attend the lesson of Ibn Uyaina. They crowded his lesson during the pilgrimage season.

Compliments to Sufyan Ibn Uyaina

He was a grand scholar, a guider, al hafizh (who has a very numerous and powerful memory), possessor of very vast knowledge, and highly respected by others. Imam Ash Shafi’i said, “Supposed there were no one as Imam Malik and Sufyan Ibn Uyaina, then the knowledge would be lost from the land of Hijaz (Mecca and Medina).” Abdurrahman Ibn Ma’di said, ”

Ibn Uyaina was among the most learned men about the hadith from the residents of Hijaz.”

He had great expertise in hadith, Qur’an interpretation, and explanation of hadith. Ibn Wahb said, “I’ve never seen a man who is more expert in the field of Qur’an interpretation beyond Sufyan Ibn Uyaina.” Imam Ahmad said, “I’ve never seen a man who had more comprehension about sunnah beside him.” Ibn Mahdi said, “Ibn Uyaina gathered within him the science of Qur’an and hadith interpretation, which was not possessed by Ath Thauri.”

The death of Imam Sufyan Ibn Uyaina

Ibn Uyaina narrated about 7000 hadith, and he hadn’t written any book. He died on the month of Jumadil Akhir, on 198 of Hijra. May Allah have mercy on Imam Sufyan Ibn Uyaina.
