Is it Lawful to Pray Alone on the Eid day?

For several years, the muslims in Indonesia often do not celebrate the eid day together. They might fast together, but to celebrate the eid, sometimes they hold different opinions. Some would obey the decision of the Department of Religious Affair, or the government, some would follow the decree of certain group or organization, some would follow the eid of Saudi Arabia -since the people there have seen the crescent earlier-, some others would follow the result of their calculation by astronomical tools, while some would simply choose whatever day that benefits them; they would choose the earlier day for sure. Then which groups should a muslim follow?

Here we bring some fatwas issued by the The General Presidency of Scholarly Research and Ifta’, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (The Lajnah Ad Da’imah Lil Buhuts Al ‘Ilmiyah wal Ifta).

[The First Fatwa – Regarding A group of People Who Celebrate the Eid alone]

Fatwa no. 10973

Question: In our country, there are some brothers who hold firmly to the teaching of the Prophet -peace and prayer of Allah be upon him- by keeping their beard long, but they hold different opinion from us in several matters.

Amongst the matters is regarding the Ramadan fast. They are reluctant to fast until they see the crescent by themselves. One day, we began the Ramadan fast one or two days before them. Sometimes they would celebrate the eid one or two days after we celebrate the Eid al Fitr. When we asked them about fasting on the eid day, they replied, “We don’t want to celebrate the eid, not to fast, until we see the crescent by our own eyes.” They reasoned with the saying of Prophet Muhammad -peace and prayer of Allah be upon him-, “Fast when you see the crescent, and celebrate the eid when you see it.” However, they do not do the seeing of the crescent using any tools that already been known. They also differ from us in performing the eid prayer, they didn’t pray until one day after the eid according to their seeing of the crescent. It is also happened in Ied al Adha, where they would differ from us in the time of slaughtering and staying at the Arofa. They would celebrate the Eid al Adha two days after our celebration. They didn’t slaughter the animals but after all muslims have slaughtered theirs. They also pray at mosques which has a grave inside it, and they say that it is not unlawful to pray inside a mosque with a grave inside it. May Allah grant you with rewards.

Answer: It is compulsory for them to fast and celebrate the eid with other people in general. They should also pray the Eid prayer together with the other muslims in their country. It is based on a hadith by the Prophet -peace and prayer of Allah be upon him- ,

الصَّوْمُ يَوْمَ تَصُومُونَ والإِفْطَارُ يَوْمَ تُفْطِرُونَ وَالأَضْحَى يَوْمَ تُضَحُّونَ

“The beginning of fast is the day when all of you begin to fast. Eid al Fitri is the day when all of you celebrate the eid al Fitr. Eid al Adha is the day when all of you celebrate the eid al Adha.” (Narrated by Abu Daud, At Tirmidhi, Ibn Maja. Classed valid by Sheikh Al Albani in “As Silsilah Ash Shohihah” no. 224)

May Allah give us His guidance, peace and prayer of Allah be upon our Prophet, Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
